The supermarket chain maintains its support for the citrus growers of the municipality through an agreement that guarantees the sale of 100% of their harvests.

For this campaign, SPAR Gran Canaria plans to market 250.000 kilos of oranges from Telde, grown on farms in the municipality and distributed directly to the Fruit and Vegetable sections of the stores in the town.

SPAR Gran Canaria signed a new collaboration agreement this morning with orange growers in Telde, reaffirming its commitment to the island's primary sector and to promoting one of the municipality's most emblematic crops. Through this agreement, the chain plans to market 250.000 kilos of oranges grown on local farms in Telde and distribute them directly to the Fruit and Vegetable sections of SPAR stores in the town.

The agreement, which has been in place continuously for thirteen years, has been renewed with the support of the Telde City Council and the Gran Canaria Island Council, as well as the participation of local citrus growers from various farms in the municipality. Thanks to this partnership, producers have the assurance that SPAR Gran Canaria will purchase 100% of their harvests, guaranteeing stability and a fair price for their products.

The oranges, of the Washington, Navelina Newhall, and Lane Late varieties, have reached their peak ripeness and will be available to customers in the fresh fruit and vegetable sections of Telde stores until the end of the season. This citrus fruit is characterized by its large size and sweetness, making it excellent for eating fresh and juicing.

The renewal of the agreement was attended by the president and vice president of SPAR Gran Canaria, Ángel Medina and José López; the general manager of the chain, Dunia Pérez; the president of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, Antonio Morales; the mayor of Telde, Juan Antonio Peña; the councilor of Primary Sector of Telde, María Inmaculada González Calderín, and the signatory farmers.

During the signing, the president of SPAR Gran Canaria, Ángel Medina, emphasized that “this agreement is not just a commercial agreement, but a strategic commitment to our territory and to the families that support the Canary Islands countryside.”

“Renewing this commitment means defending a sustainable agricultural model and protecting a deeply rooted heritage with a 130-year history. Telde oranges represent quality, tradition, and local pride, and we will continue working to ensure they occupy the place they deserve on the tables of Canarian families,” he added.

The president of the Gran Canaria Island Council emphasized the importance of these types of initiatives "for the promotion of the country's products" and argued that "it is the best way to sustain local production, to guarantee the producer a fair price, the sale of their production and the primacy of local products over foreign ones."

Antonio Morales noted that Gran Canaria has the largest cultivated area of fruit trees of any island and highlighted the work of the Cabildo's Department of Primary Sector with producers of oranges and other citrus fruits such as mandarins, limes, lemons and grapefruits, through their valorization, classification or presentation in ecological packaging, in addition to "raising public awareness of the importance of consuming local products".

The mayor of Telde stated that “this agreement is excellent news for farmers, for SPAR Gran Canaria, whose commitment reflects the growing demand from customers, and of course, for the city of Telde, which continues to strengthen the visibility of our flagship product, the orange, a fruit that has gradually recovered the image of quality it has always had in this region.”
