Around fifty farmers and producers from 14 municipalities on the island are meeting at this gathering until tomorrow, Sunday.

The 34th edition of the Km.0 Gran Canaria Fair opened its doors today at the Agüimes Fairgrounds with the aim of promoting the primary sector which, as explained by the president of the Gran Canaria Island Council, Antonio Morales, during its inauguration, "is key for our territory, to protect the landscape, to generate employment, to eat fresher food, to reduce the ecological footprint or to fight against fires."

The president noted that Km.0 products "meet all the conditions and, therefore, guaranteeing with spaces like this that the producer can offer their product directly, without intermediaries, and that the consumer can come and purchase it, represents an important step in the strategy of adding value to local products."

For his part, the mayor of the host municipality, Óscar Hernández, stated that the municipality of Agüimes agrees with the Gran Canaria Island Council's commitment to food sovereignty for the island, and pointed out that "supporting Km.0 Fairs and the agricultural sector is part of improving the landscape and strengthening the population's connection to the territory."

Promoted and financed by the Gran Canaria Island Council, organized by Infecar, Gran Canaria Fair and co-organized by the Agüimes City Council, this 34th edition of the exhibition hosts 60 stands this weekend, 58 of which are stands of farmers and producers from 14 municipalities of the Island, accompanied by the Gran Canaria Me Gusta program, the Gran Canaria Chamber of Commerce, Gran Canaria Tourism and the Canary Institute of Agri-food Quality (ICCA).

The host municipality, Agüimes, has brought the most stallholders to this meeting focused on agri-food products, specifically ten wine and cheese producers; specialists in the production of pata, micro-vegetable growers, beer makers and representatives of the Salinas de Bocabarranco.

Ingenio and Santa Lucía, for their part, attend the fair with eight and six producers, respectively, to add to the local offer products such as spices, aloe vera drinks, bread, plants and flowers, honey and olives and a wide variety of cheeses.

The other eleven participating municipalities - Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Moya, Santa Brígida, Valsequillo, San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Arucas, San Mateo, Teror, Firgas, Gáldar and Telde - will also contribute mushrooms, jams, sugarcane, ice cream, juices and pastries, among other products.

Among the new additions to this edition is Coffee Funghi, a producer from Gáldar whose business is based on a circular economy model focused on repurposing coffee grounds collected from establishments in the municipality. This waste becomes the substrate used to cultivate varieties such as oyster, shiitake, and lion's mane mushrooms, which they sell both fresh and in derived products, including an organic coffee produced in collaboration with Café Ortega. The company also offers home cultivation kits and educational workshops at their farm to familiarize the public with the production process and promote local mycological culture.

The Km.0 Gran Canaria Fair, which will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 14:00 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday, thus stands as an ideal meeting point to acquire high-quality products, collaborate with the local economy and promote sustainability on the island.
