The president of the Island Council, Antonio Morales, and the tourism councilor, Carlos Álamo, welcomed Tadej Pogačar and the rest of the cyclists who will be riding around the island from November 24 to 30.

Morales: “Their presence and that of top-level cyclists opens a window for the world to see the conditions that the island offers.”

The Maspalomas Lighthouse was the setting this Monday for the symbolic start of the Gran Canaria 365 initiative, a strategic action aimed at reinforcing the projection of the island as a leading cycling destination throughout the year.

Around twenty cyclists from the international peloton, led by the world champion, Tadej Pogačar, along with institutional representatives and promoters of the project, staged the starting gun of this initiative, in an event in which the president of the Gran Canaria Island Council, Antonio Morales, and the island councilor of Tourism, welcomed the athletes who will be riding around the island during the next few days.

“The presence of Pogačar and top-level cyclists on the island opens a great window for the world to see once again that Gran Canaria has the ideal conditions for practicing sports throughout the year thanks to its climate, infrastructure and connectivity, all within the context of an island model of sustainable development, a commitment to diversification and a conviction in the capacity for social transformation of sporting values,” said the president of the Island Council, Antonio Morales.

For his part, the Tourism Councillor of Gran Canaria, Carlos Álamo, stated: “Gran Canaria is a multi-product destination, which has added to its offerings the appeal of practicing sports 365 days a year, something especially valued by cyclists. Therefore, having a legend like Pogacar, along with the other two current world champions, gives us a golden opportunity to showcase our island and all its potential to millions of cycling fans around the world.”

Also participating in the event were Nicolás Villalobos, president of Tri Bike & Run; Ramón Suárez, Councilor for Sports of San Bartolomé de Tirajana; and Daniel González, manager of DG Eventos.

From November 24th to 30th, the cyclists will hold training sessions at various locations across the island and will participate in the TotalEnergies Gran Fondo Pico de las Nieves, which will take place on November 30th. Simultaneously, a press conference with international media will be held, further promoting Gran Canaria as a prime location for professional training and sports tourism.

The main media focus of the day was Tadej Pogacar, world champion and four-time winner of the Tour de France, who has chosen Gran Canaria, along with more than twenty top-level figures, attracted by the climate, the terrain and the quality of the infrastructure that the island offers for the practice of high-performance cycling.
