The BIOCON research group at the ECOAQUA Institute of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC) has launched a strategic study of La Charca de Maspalomas, the delicate wetland and vital ecosystem in the south of the island. Dr. Inma Herrera, a BIOCON researcher, recently emphasized the urgency of this research. The primary objective is to obtain an accurate assessment of the wetland's biodiversity and, critically, to quantify the impact and behavior of invasive species, with Mozambique tilapia as a key focus. The presence of these non-native species poses a serious threat to the balance of the local habitat, and obtaining robust scientific data is essential for developing any effective long-term conservation and management plan.
