One hundred kilos of waste were removed from the Maspalomas Ravine during an environmental volunteering day held on Thursday, November 28th in San Bartolomé de Tirajana
The San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council's Department of Cleaning collaborated this Thursday, November 28, in an environmental volunteer day organized by Oceans4Life and the Route 66 Foundation. The action brought together various groups and students, including students from the British School of Gran Canaria accompanied by their teachers, who actively participated in cleaning the area around the Maspalomas Ravine.
During the morning, 100 kilos of waste were removed, sorted, and separated on the spot for proper treatment. Most of the collected trash consisted of single-use plastics: bags, wrappers, cans, cups, and small containers, much of it presumably from people who frequent the nearby sports area and South Park, eat food by the ravine, and then throw their waste into the stream.
The Department of Cleaning provided the necessary materials for the activity and thanked the participants for their involvement. Furthermore, the Councilor for Cleaning, Ruyman Cardoso, emphasized “the importance of depositing waste in the designated containers in the area to prevent it from falling into the ravine, damaging the natural environment, and ultimately reaching the sea.”
The initiative, spearheaded by Oceans4Life and the Route 66 Foundation, received support from the local government for its coordination and implementation. The collaboration between social organizations, schools, volunteers, and the City Council once again demonstrated the value of working together to create a cleaner and more sustainable municipality.
