More than 100 new containers bring clarity to selective waste collection in San Fernando, El Tablero and Sonneland

Alejandro Marichal: “We are aware that there is still much to be done, but the new contract and the new containers represent a milestone in the transformation of management and in the image of cleanliness of our municipality.”

Ruyman Cardoso: “We have completed the installation in several areas of the municipality and are already deploying the new containers in Playa del Inglés, El Pajar and Cercados de Espino”

The Department of Cleaning continues to roll out the new selective waste collection service in the municipality, under the contract awarded to Ayagaures Medioambiente SLU. To date, the installation of the new yellow and blue containers has been completed in Bellavista, San Fernando de Maspalomas (except for the container islands), El Tablero, Sonneland, Salobre, Montaña Blanca, Playa de Triana, and the Pasito Blanco campsite, thus consolidating a significant improvement in waste management and the urban landscape of these residential, commercial, and tourist areas. Simultaneously, the rollout is already underway in Playa del Inglés, and it is expected to be completed this week in El Pajar, Cercados de Espino, Castillo del Romeral, and Juan Grande.

The modernization of the service is based on a complete renewal of the container fleet and a system adapted to the municipality's current needs. The rollout is being carried out progressively, neighborhood by neighborhood, in a planned manner, allowing the old containers to coexist with the new units for a period of time until the changeover is complete in each area. As of Tuesday, December 9th, 110 new containers had been installed as part of this rollout, a number that will continue to increase with the actions planned between December 10th and 12th.

The new service is part of the selective waste collection contract with Ayagaures Medioambiente SLU, valued at €4.873.250,26 until 2028. Under this contract, the Department of Cleaning will renew the container fleet with 560 new units—280 yellow and 280 blue—compared to the existing 380. This represents a 47,37% increase in collection capacity and improved coverage in neighborhoods, commercial areas, and tourist zones. This reinforcement is further supported by the positive trend in recycling data for the municipality: the service had been operating under an expired contract since 2019 and with parameters from 2010, when only 7,1 kilos of recyclable material per inhabitant were collected annually, compared to the current 27,9 kilos per person recycled.

The Councillor for Cleaning, Ruyman Cardoso, emphasizes that “since we launched the new selective waste collection contract in September, we are meeting our objectives, and residents are already beginning to see the difference in neighborhoods like San Fernando, El Tablero, and Sonneland, with over a hundred new containers installed. The container renewal and service improvement allow us to take a step forward in cleanliness, sustainability, and the quality of life for residents.” Our goal, Cardoso continues, is “to continue working neighborhood by neighborhood, adjusting the distribution of collection points to the actual needs of each area.”

For his part, the First Deputy Mayor of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Alejandro Marichal, emphasizes that “doubling the selective collection capacity and redistributing the deposit points allows us to bring recycling closer to more distant areas, improve service in areas with greater economic activity, and reduce problems associated with overflows or lack of space. In this way, the municipality is adapting its cleaning service to the current population size, with a more efficient model better suited to the growth experienced in recent years.”

However, Marichal adds, “we are aware that there is still much to be done to improve cleanliness, but the new contract and the new containers represent a decisive milestone to begin a real transformation in the management and image of cleanliness in our municipality.”

The Department of Sanitation encourages residents to use the new containers correctly and reminds them that dumping or leaving items in unauthorized areas is prohibited. Recycling centers are the appropriate places to dispose of this type of waste.
