Alejandro Marichal: “We continue to promote projects that encourage the active participation of children and young people in the municipality, thus generating new meeting spaces where neighborhoods continue to be the protagonists.”
Ruyman Cardoso: “This project was born with the idea of opening up participation to younger people through urban dance, which is a language that they understand, recognize, and feel as part of their identity.”
The Department of Citizen Participation, headed by Ruyman Cardoso, will conclude the "Move with Your Neighborhood" project in the coming days. This initiative, which began in October, has engaged over 4.000 students from schools in San Bartolomé de Tirajana, targeting primary and secondary school students. The program, developed by the Urban Dance Maspalomas school with the support of the department, will culminate on December 15th and 16th with a grand urban dance final at the Víctor Miranda Municipal Sports Pavilion in San Fernando. There, a competition will be held between the groups formed at the various schools over the past few months.
'Move with your neighborhood' has been structured in two phases. First, weekly one-hour workshops have been held in schools, led by specialized instructors, introducing urban dance styles such as hip hop, breakdance, popping, locking, and dancehall, among others. From these sessions, the various groups and choreographies have been formed, and they are now preparing for the final event.

In a second phase, the work carried out in the schools and institutes culminates in the grand final scheduled for December 15th and 16th at the Víctor Miranda Pavilion in San Fernando. This event will bring together the participating groups to compete and determine which school is the winner, in a format typical of urban dance culture.
The 'Move with Your Neighborhood' initiative has been launched thanks to a €4.700 grant for urban dance workshops in schools, through the Urban Dance Maspalomas school. In addition, the Department of Citizen Participation has contributed €15.000 for the organization and execution of the grand final, which will be held at the Víctor Miranda Municipal Sports Pavilion in San Fernando.
The competition will be held in a battle crew format, a style typical of urban dance in which two teams face off in several rounds without physical contact, alternating 45-second performances per dancer. The performances will be judged by a panel on aspects such as technique, creativity, synchronization, stage presence, and responsiveness to the opposing team.
Furthermore, the 'Move with Your Neighborhood' grand finale will extend beyond the competition. The winning groups, comprised of approximately 50 participants, will receive a three-month training scholarship, allowing them to continue their education at the Urban Dance Maspalomas school. This phase will culminate in a battle-style competition, where the scholarship recipients will share the stage with members of the urban dance club, resulting in a final, inclusive event.

In the words of the Councilor for Citizen Participation, Ruyman Cardoso, this project “was born with the idea of opening up participation to young people through urban dance, a language they understand, recognize, and feel as part of their identity.” Cardoso also expressed his gratitude for “the involvement of the management teams, teachers, and students of the participating schools, as well as the work of the Urban Dance Maspalomas school, which has successfully connected the artistic aspect with the community dimension of the project.”
For his part, the First Deputy Mayor, Alejandro Marichal, emphasized that the City Council “will continue to promote projects that encourage the active participation of children and young people in the municipality, in coordination with the educational community, associations and the cultural and sporting fabric, generating new meeting spaces where the neighborhoods continue to be protagonists.”
With the grand final held at the Víctor Miranda Municipal Sports Pavilion in San Fernando, the Department of Citizen Participation concludes the first edition of "Move with Your Neighborhood," an initiative that reinforces the use of urban culture as a tool for participation, community building, and inclusion among the municipality's youth. The department will continue working with the educational community and local social organizations to consolidate these types of initiatives, expanding spaces where neighborhoods become meeting points and venues for expression for young people.
