The Department of Health is launching an educational campaign aimed at raising public awareness about the need to control pigeon populations in order to try to eradicate the damage they cause.
Feeding urban pigeons is becoming a very serious health problem for the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, which is why the Department of Health, headed by councilor Araceli Armas Cruz, has launched a civic awareness campaign to prevent their spread.
The campaign is aimed at the general public to encourage their active participation in improving urban pigeon pest control. These birds are multiplying due to people feeding them, despite this being strictly prohibited.
The uncontrolled proliferation of pigeons in urban environments poses a significant risk to public health, as they can be vectors of various diseases such as histoplasmosis, psittacosis, and salmonellosis. Furthermore, the droppings of these birds are causing considerable damage to street furniture, building facades, and roofs, leading to a significant increase in maintenance and cleaning costs.
Prevent the spread
“Raising public awareness is essential to preventing the development of urban pests. From the city council, in exercising its powers in matters of public health and protection of the urban environment, we are promoting this campaign with informational actions that provide citizens with the necessary knowledge to address this problem,” says Araceli Armas.
“Organizing this campaign is a preventative measure that addresses a significant need, both from a public health perspective and for the proper maintenance of the urban environment. Raising awareness and encouraging residents to take steps to prevent the spread of pigeons and protect public health is essential,” stated the Councilor for Health.
Despite the actions taken by the City Council in recent years to reduce the number of pigeons through regular captures, the number of specimens does not decrease because the social idea of feeding them persists, without taking into account the harmful effects that this entails, because it contributes to their nesting and multiplication.
