The supermarket chain has renewed its collaboration agreement with farmers in Gran Canaria to promote the production and marketing of this product, an initiative that is now sixteen years old.

SPAR Gran Canaria provides producers with seeds each year, committing to buy the harvest later at a fair market price.

SPAR Gran Canaria will sell 1.500 tons of locally grown potatoes in 2026, thanks to the renewal of its agreement with farmers dedicated to cultivating this essential product in the Canarian shopping basket. The supermarket chain has renewed its collaboration agreement to promote the production and marketing of high-quality local potatoes on the island of Gran Canaria, an initiative that has been driving the consumption of locally sourced products for sixteen years.

The Canary Islands brand has distributed 135.000 kilos of seeds among the eight individual potato farmers participating in this year's agreement. These seeds, of various varieties such as Picasso, Rudolf, Spunta, and Galáctica, will be cultivated in the coming months in different municipalities across the island, strengthening local potato production for consumption in Gran Canaria.

Farmers are guaranteed that SPAR Gran Canaria will purchase 100% of their harvest at fair prices, allowing them to cover production costs and providing them with security. This year, eight fruit and vegetable farmers and organizations are participating in the campaign, cultivating potatoes in the municipalities of Santa Brígida, Vega de San Mateo, Santa María de Guía, Moya, Valsequillo, Telde, and Santa Lucía de Tirajana.

The renewal of the agreement has been signed between SPAR Gran Canaria and the Government of the Canary Islands, the Island Council, the Coordinator of Farmers and Livestock Organizations of the Canary Islands (COAG) and the farmers participating in the campaign.

The signing ceremony was attended by the president of SPAR Gran Canaria, Ángel Medina, and vice president, José López; the president of the Gran Canaria Island Council, Antonio Morales; and the island's councilor for the Primary Sector, Miguel Hidalgo. Also present were Tamara Cruz Ralph, a member of the COAG Canarias Executive Committee, and the signatory farmers.

The president of SPAR Gran Canaria, Ángel Medina, emphasized that “this agreement reaffirms the chain's strong commitment to local products and its genuine dedication to local farmers.” He also stressed “the importance of continuing to strengthen the sector's competitiveness against imported potatoes, working to ensure that our farmers have fair conditions that allow them to grow and thrive.”

“Local products require protection from those of us who distribute them and the support of consumers. Agreements like today’s and the others we have signed throughout the year are further proof of SPAR Gran Canaria’s real and sustained commitment to the future of the Canary Islands’ agricultural sector,” he stated.

Seed pre-financing

One of the key pillars of the agreement is the pre-financing of seeds by SPAR Gran Canaria. Each year, the supermarket chain advances the necessary seeds for growing this tuber and commits to purchasing the harvest later at a fair market price. This measure guarantees income for farmers, as the cost of the seeds is deducted from the purchase price of the harvest, thus ensuring the economic viability of their farms.

The potatoes grown through the agreement will be marketed under the SPAR brand La Cosecha Canaria, available at all the chain's points of sale spread throughout the island's municipalities.

Throughout its history, this agreement has provided a decisive boost to the island's primary sector, contributing to the maintenance of agricultural employment, the sustainability of the territory, and the promotion of local product consumption.

Proof of this is the award given this year by the Island Council to SPAR Gran Canaria with the Award for Best Project for the Valorization of the Potato of Gran Canaria, a recognition that highlights the work of the chain for its commitment to the primary sector and the continued support for this product.
