The Department of Cleaning has carried out a specific campaign to promote glass container recycling in the municipality's hospitality sector, in collaboration with Ecovidrio. The initiative has allowed for direct visits and advice to nearly 900 establishments, with the aim of improving waste separation and ensuring compliance with the Municipal Recycling Ordinance.
During the last few weeks, the council's technical staff and environmental educators conducted surveys and personalized interviews in bars, restaurants and tourist accommodations, identifying their real needs and offering training on how to optimize glass collection.
As part of the collaboration, Ecovidrio delivered 35 buckets of different sizes, free of charge to the businesses, in order to facilitate the transfer of the containers to the selective collection containers.
This collaborative effort has allowed the recycling rate of establishments to increase from 90% to almost 100%, solidifying San Bartolomé de Tirajana's position as a leader in sustainability within the tourism sector. The council continues to strengthen the network of green containers throughout the municipality, relocating or expanding collection points based on service demand and requests from the businesses themselves.

The Councillor for Cleaning, Ruymán Cardoso, emphasized that “the involvement of the businesses has been exemplary, and we will continue working with Ecovidrio to adapt the service to the real needs of the municipality. In some cases, the lack of space has been a difficulty, but we are offering customized solutions to facilitate the correct separation and recycling of containers.”
The hospitality sector generates approximately half of the single-use glass packaging produced in Spain, so its involvement is essential to reducing waste and advancing sustainability.
Glass is a 100% recyclable material that can be reused indefinitely. Recycling it saves energy, reduces the extraction of raw materials, and prevents the emission of tons of CO₂ into the atmosphere, directly contributing to the fight against climate change.
The Cleaning Department will maintain its collaboration with Ecovidrio through annual campaigns and training actions aimed at both hoteliers and citizens.
