The Housing Department is launching the elevator infrastructure project in the La Paz Urbanization

Maspalomas24h Tuesday, December 23 of 2025

Alejandro Marichal: “We are carrying out 16 million in works to rehabilitate the existing housing stock and we will continue to act in the coming years with new urbanizations.”

Lucía Jiménez: “The commissioning of the elevators responds to a real need of the urbanisation and marks a decisive point in the rehabilitation of La Paz.”

The Housing Department has begun installing the elevator structure in the La Paz Urbanization in San Fernando de Maspalomas, as part of the comprehensive rehabilitation works being carried out in this Programmed Rehabilitation Residential Area (ERRP). This action is part of the project officially launched in June 2025 and directly benefits 132 families and 8 businesses, incorporating substantial improvements in accessibility, habitability, and energy efficiency.

The works are progressing according to the planned technical schedule and are part of a comprehensive project that includes structural, energy-efficient, and urban improvement measures. The installation of the elevator system adheres to universal accessibility standards and addresses a long-standing demand from residents of the La Paz residential complex, providing tangible improvements to the daily use of the buildings and enhancing the independence of their inhabitants.

In 2023, when the Canary Coalition was in opposition, a motion supported by 225 residents' signatures was presented requesting the rehabilitation of the residential area. Today, with construction underway and the installation of elevators in progress, the project is becoming a reality as a result of sustained planning and a commitment to addressing a structural need within the public housing stock.

The project has a total investment of €4.729.170,84, jointly financed by various public administrations. The Housing Department, the Government of the Canary Islands, and the Government of Spain are participating in its implementation, through the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, with funding from the European Union's NextGenerationEU program. The project adheres to the criteria of the Neighborhood Rehabilitation Actions Aid Program, which regulates the financing of interventions in residential buildings and the improvement of public spaces in Residential Environments Under Planned Rehabilitation (ERRP).

The works include structural rehabilitation, improvements to hygiene and habitability, exterior facade cladding, roof improvements, replacement of windows and exterior glazing, and improved energy efficiency by replacing the existing electric water heaters with air-to-water heat pumps for domestic hot water production. In addition, improvements are being made to public outdoor areas, including common spaces, green areas, and landscaping, thus enhancing the urban spaces of the residential complex.

The First Deputy Mayor, Alejandro Marichal, emphasized that the 2023-2027 Housing Plan is translating into concrete actions already underway. “We are investing 16 million euros in works to rehabilitate the existing public housing stock, focusing on developments that have needed it for years,” he stated. He explained that these interventions allow homes to be adapted to the energy and accessibility requirements that will be demanded in the coming years, while also ensuring their continued availability in the rental and housing markets.

For her part, the Councilor for Housing, Lucía Jiménez, highlighted the impact the installation of the elevators has on the daily life of the neighborhood. “The addition of the elevators responds to a long-standing demand in La Paz and represents a real improvement for many families, especially for the elderly and those with reduced mobility. This project reinforces a renovation designed to improve accessibility, safety, and the everyday use of the buildings,” she stated.

The rehabilitation of the La Paz housing development serves a dual purpose: to improve the living conditions of current residents and to ensure that these properties continue to fulfill their social function. The improvements will maintain the homes in adequate conditions of accessibility, efficiency, and habitability, preventing their deterioration and ensuring their continued availability on the San Bartolomé de Tirajana housing market.
