Maspalomas 2025: The events that marked the south of Gran Canaria

Gara Hernández - M24h Monday, December 29, 2025

The year 2025 began with a scare when, on February 10, a young man was arrested after indecent exposure in front of a school, jumping on cars and disrupting traffic. Shortly after, on February 21, the Hotel Espléndido was the scene of a gas explosion in its kitchens that injured one worker. Politically, Nueva Canarias restructured its leadership in April following internal crises, while social debate intensified on April 15 with warnings about rising crime in the Vecindario area and its potential spread to Maspalomas. Spring ended with a fiery incident on April 26, with a controlled burn at the former dog track.

Events under the blazing sun

Summer brought with it one of the darkest periods of the year. Following a serious hit-and-run on the GC-500 on June 9th and the arrest of a National Police officer for alleged extortion on June 17th, July became a month of crime. On July 16th, Playa del Inglés awoke to the discovery of the body of a young homeless man, stabbed to death on the mattress where he slept; a crime that would be solved days later with the arrest of a neighbor for a trivial dispute over tobacco. Almost simultaneously, on July 17th, a violent fight between members of a cannabis club in San Fernando ended with one man seriously injured and airlifted to a hospital after being stabbed multiple times with scissors.

Storms, garbage, and asphalt

August brought not only heat but also an unexpected electrical storm on the 15th that drove tourists away from the beaches. The municipal administration focused on approving improvements to the Las Llaves residential area and the Low Emission Zone, although residents raised their voices on August 21st due to the alarming accumulation of garbage. September was a month of institutional contrasts and emergencies: while 38 municipal workers were given permanent positions on the 10th, a fire on the 21st in Santa Lucía forced precautionary evacuations. The month ended with a curious incident: the arrest of a man in his seventies who, disguised as a cyclist and wearing fake tattoos, had stolen eleven bicycles.

The autumn of social challenges

October began with a harrowing rescue on the 1st of a young man who disappeared at sea while trying to recover a jet ski. However, public attention shifted to the worrying phenomenon of school bullying after a video of a child being humiliated went viral. The last few months have been marked by the PSOE's complaint about irregularities in personnel management and a wave of robberies on Avenida Alejandro del Castillo that has alarmed residents. The year ends with a mixed bag of security news: the dismantling of a hair salon that was being used as a drug den and, finally, the lighting of the Christmas lights in Parque del Sur, an attempt to restore festive normalcy.
