The adverse weather conditions forecast for the coming days in the Canary Islands have led the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council and the Gran Canaria band to suspend the popular concert scheduled for the afternoon of January 1st.
The event, which celebrates its tenth edition this year and features the prestigious Spanish instrumentalist Jorge Pardo as a guest, has been moved this time to next Tuesday, January 6, Three Kings' Day, at 6:30 p.m. and in the same location.
Olga Cerpa and Mestisay are celebrating a decade since they began offering their now-popular New Year's Concert at the Mirador de las Dunas in Maspalomas. This year, the concert has become a Three Kings' Day Concert. The overwhelming success of the first edition, which exceeded all expectations, has made it a staple of Gran Canaria's Christmas cultural program. To commemorate these ten years of sharing their music with the public, they have invited the multi-award-winning saxophonist and flautist Jorge Pardo to join them for the recital.
With free admission until capacity is reached, the concert will begin at sunset, around 6:30 p.m., as has been the case in the previous nine editions. Produced by Amilkilómetros, the event is organized by the Department of Culture of the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council and the Department of Culture of the Gran Canaria Island Council, with the collaboration of Riu Hotels and Canary Islands Radio and Television.
The novelty of the repertoires developed in each of the calls of this special production, the extraordinary environmental setting and the heterogeneity of an audience of diverse nationalities make this concert, in which Olga and Mestisay integrate themselves into the modern architectural space proposed in the Mirador using it as a natural stage, enjoy a warm public response.
This year's program will feature many of the Canary Islands band's popular songs, along with four new tracks premiering that night, all of which will be part of their upcoming album. This self-produced album, recorded between Lisbon and the Canary Islands, features collaborations with renowned African instrumentalists and singers. It will be released next spring under the title "La Costa de los cantares" (The Coast of Songs).
In the middle of the program they will add the talent of Jorge Pardo on winds; Pardo, winner of the Best European Jazz Musician Award, the National Prize for Contemporary Music and Grammy Awards for the album "Antidote" with Chick Corea and participant in numerous musical adventures such as those made with Paco de Lucia or Camarón in his mythical album "La leyenda del tiempo", uses a mixed musical language between roots jazz and flamenco and his style with the transverse flute and saxophone is considered a reference of innovation in World music and jazz.
Olga and Mestisay will be accompanied at this special concert by a nine-piece band, all regular members of Mestisay's ensemble, under the artistic direction of Manuel González and the musical direction of Hirahi Afonso. The band includes Hirahi himself on the timple, percussionists Johnny Olivares, Antonio Montesdeoca, and Totó Noriega, bassist Jaime del Pino, and Juan Carlos León “Mosco” on winds and woodwinds. On this occasion, they will also be joined by Domingo Saavedra on piano from Fuerteventura and Arjady López on tres from Cuba.
