The Government of the Canary Islands, through the General Directorate of Emergencies, declared during the early hours of Thursday, January 1st, an alert situation for coastal phenomena throughout the Archipelago, as well as an alert for rain and wind in the islands.
The weather event will move quickly from west to east, but with intensity, fully impacting travel between the end of 2025 and the beginning of 2026. For this reason, the regional government is asking the public to take extra precautions during travel and celebrations planned for these dates.
According to the official forecast, combined sea levels of between 2,5 and 4 meters are expected, with these heights potentially exceeding in some areas starting Friday, January 2nd. Conditions are expected to worsen over the weekend due to the full moon and spring tides. Rainfall will be uneven, although it could be locally heavy and persistent for at least 12 hours, especially in vulnerable areas.
Forecast for the south and southeast of Gran Canaria, including Mogán
According to AEMET Canarias, the south and southeast of Gran Canaria, including municipalities such as Mogán, San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Agüimes, and Ingenio, will experience periods of locally moderate rain, with the possibility of isolated heavy showers, especially during the passage of the weather front. Winds will blow from the west and southwest, with strong gusts in mid-altitude and exposed areas, while sea conditions will be rough, so it is strongly recommended to avoid all nautical activities and unprotected coastal areas.
Situation in the north of Gran Canaria
In northern Gran Canaria, heavier rainfall is expected, with more persistent showers and a chance of occasional thunderstorms. Strong gusts of wind are also possible in higher elevations, and significant swells are anticipated along the northern coast, where it is strongly advised to stay away from surf zones, piers, and breakwaters.
Self-protection recommendations
Given this situation, the Government of the Canary Islands reminds everyone of the importance of taking extreme precautions on the coast, avoiding staying in areas near the sea, docks or breakwaters, as well as postponing nautical, sporting or recreational activities and not swimming in secluded or unsupervised beaches.
