Alejandro Marichal: “We have secured six million euros that allow us to begin construction of public housing in El Tablero and expand the rental stock so that families in the municipality can access decent housing.”
Lucía Jiménez: “These homes will allow us to offer affordable rentals in one of the areas with the highest residential pressure in the municipality.”
Pablo Rodríguez: “Collaboration between administrations is key to expanding the public housing stock in the south of Gran Canaria”
The Housing Department, headed by Lucía Jiménez, is promoting the construction of 43 public housing units for subsidized rent in El Tablero, within the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana. The project will be developed in Sector T4, on municipal plots 7 and 10S, and is the result of institutional collaboration with the Canary Islands Government's Ministry of Public Works, Housing, and Mobility, led by Pablo Rodríguez. This collaboration has enabled an investment of six million euros to expand the public housing stock in the municipality.
The project aims to facilitate access to decent and affordable housing for the local population, especially working families who are currently priced out of the housing market by the high cost of housing. This development is part of the program to increase the public housing stock, within the Canary Islands Housing Plan 2020-2025.
The project involves the construction of a new multi-family building, adhering to the technical and economic criteria established by current regulations. Once completed, the 43 apartments will be transferred to the Canary Islands Housing Institute (ICAVI) for inclusion in the public rental housing stock, guaranteeing their social use and public management.
The document details that the development will be built on two municipally owned plots of land: plot 7, with an area of 1.075 square meters, and plot 10S, with an area of 780 square meters. The total cost of the project amounts to six million euros (€6.000.000), funding already approved within the framework of cooperation between the Canary Islands Government's Ministry of Public Works, Housing and Mobility and the Housing Department.
The development will include 43 one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments, adapted to different types of households, with a special focus on single-person households and single-parent families, whose presence has increased in the municipality. In addition, the building will have 52 parking spaces and 43 storage units, providing the development with complete infrastructure.
The First Deputy Mayor, Alejandro Marichal, stated that “these six million euros allow us to begin construction of public housing in El Tablero and expand the rental stock so that families in the municipality can access housing under better conditions.” He explained that this investment is part of a work plan that aims to make public housing available to the public, update urban planning, rehabilitate existing public housing, and implement rental assistance programs, in order to prevent residents from having to leave, strengthen their sense of belonging, and regulate residential use in a municipality with strong pressure from the real estate market.
For her part, the Councilor for Housing, Lucía Jiménez, emphasized that “these public housing units will allow us to offer affordable rentals in one of the areas with the highest residential pressure in the municipality, namely El Tablero.” Jiménez noted that, according to the most recent data, San Bartolomé de Tirajana has approximately 49.000 registered residents, of whom more than 7.000 live in El Tablero, and that the average price of a home in this area “is unattainable for many families with average incomes.”
In this regard, he explained that the market price of a typical home in El Tablero, between 90 and 100 square meters, is around €280.000, compared to an average annual rent of around €21.700, which highlights the difficulty of accessing housing. “That is why it is essential that public rental housing continues to grow and fulfills its social function,” he added.
The Minister of Public Works, Housing, and Mobility for the Canary Islands Government, Pablo Rodríguez, emphasized that “collaboration between administrations is key to expanding the public housing stock in southern Gran Canaria.” Rodríguez recalled that the meeting held in September 2025 allowed for coordinated progress toward making this public housing development in El Tablero a reality, reinforcing institutional cooperation in housing matters.
With this action, the Housing Department is making progress in expanding the public housing stock, helping to curb the displacement of the local population, and strengthening the connection to one of the most important residential areas in southern Gran Canaria, advocating for a more balanced and socially just urban development model.
