Pretrial detention for murder after the death of a newborn in Maspalomas

GARA HERNÁNDEZ - M24H Thursday, January 08, 2026

A judge in San Bartolomé de Tirajana ordered on Wednesday the provisional imprisonment, without bail, of the woman accused of murder after the death of her newborn baby, whom she allegedly abandoned in the bathrooms of a private clinic in southern Gran Canaria.

The events date back to Sunday, January 4, when hospital staff found the lifeless body of the newborn in the restrooms of the medical center, located in Maspalomas, and immediately notified the police. The police intervention led to the arrest of the alleged perpetrator as part of an investigation that has been given priority due to the seriousness of the crime.

The case has been taken up by the Court of Instruction number 3 of the Court of First Instance of San Bartolomé de Tirajana. After taking the detainee's statement, the magistrate ordered her to be remanded in custody, finding sufficient evidence of criminal activity and the fulfillment of the legal requirements for adopting the most severe precautionary measure.

According to the High Court of Justice of the Canary Islands, the investigation remains open to clarify precisely the circumstances surrounding the events, as well as any possible aggravating factors. The case has generated significant public outcry in the south of the island, a predominantly tourist area where such incidents are extremely rare. Judicial authorities emphasize that the pretrial detention is based solely on legal and procedural criteria, without prejudging the final outcome of the proceedings, which will continue in court in the coming weeks.
