Alejandro Marichal: “These waste bins complement the municipal waste collection plan. We continue working to implement measures that improve cleanliness.”

Ruyman Cardoso: “We improved selective collection and service planning thanks to fill sensors, allowing for better work organization.”

The San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council's Department of Cleaning has begun installing 43 smart solar-powered litter bins this week in various areas along the municipality's tourist coastline, as part of the Impulsa Maspalomas project, funded by the European Union's Next Generation program. The project is being implemented in high-traffic areas such as the Costa Canaria promenade, from Annex II of Playa del Inglés to San Agustín, as well as at the Maspalomas Lighthouse Pond and Meloneras, with the aim of improving waste collection in these locations.

This intervention is limited exclusively to the tourist area, as it is linked to a tourism sustainability plan approved by the European Union, whose earmarked funds require that projects be carried out in areas of intensive tourist use. Therefore, this investment is conditioned by the criteria of the European program and does not replace or limit the routine improvements to the cleaning service in the municipality's residential areas.

The installation of these new bins is being carried out gradually, and the work is expected to be completed between January 19th and 25th. The bins are equipped with a solar-powered system and a self-compacting mechanism that triples their capacity compared to conventional models, allowing for longer emptying intervals. They also incorporate fill sensors that facilitate the planning of collection routes, optimizing service and reducing overflows in high-traffic areas.

This action is part of a strategy aimed at improving selective waste collection, especially at beach access points and along promenades, where a high volume of waste accumulates. The new bins are primarily intended for separating packaging and paper/cardboard, promoting recycling in key areas of the municipality. The Impulsa Maspalomas project, through which this initiative is funded, focuses on modernizing public services and improving the urban environment in tourist areas.

First Deputy Mayor Alejandro Marichal stated that “the installation of these smart bins strengthens the municipal response in high-traffic areas, incorporating tools that help to organize and modernize public spaces.” “We continue working to implement measures that improve cleanliness. This is a specific action that complements the Municipal Cleaning Plan, aimed at restoring order to public spaces and improving service throughout the municipality,” Marichal concluded.

On the other hand, the Councillor for Cleaning, Ruyman Cardoso, explained that “these bins allow us to improve selective collection and plan the service more efficiently thanks to the fill sensors, which translates into better work organization and a more rational use of resources.”

The implementation of this system represents a step forward in waste management along the tourist coast, facilitating recycling in high-traffic areas and helping to maintain promenades and beach access points in better condition. The technology incorporated allows for anticipating peak times, preventing garbage accumulation and improving the municipality's image for residents and visitors alike.

The Department of Cleaning continues to work progressively to improve the service, with a realistic and aware approach to the existing shortcomings. This action is part of a management-based strategy, with a commitment to continue implementing measures that contribute to restoring order and cleanliness to the municipality's public spaces.
