San Roque University Hospitals and UROINTEC implement a new connected Robotic Surgery platform in the archipelago
The Canary Islands are advancing as a leader in Robotic Surgery and Medical Innovation thanks to the incorporation of the Edge MP1000, a multi-port robotic surgical system with unprecedented capacity in the region to perform remote connected surgery procedures thousands of kilometers away.
This project is being promoted and developed by UROINTEC, a company headquartered in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and dedicated to Urology, Innovation, and Technology. Clinically based at the Urology and Andrology Clinic (GUA), the project will be implemented in the Canary Islands in partnership with San Roque University Hospitals, where the robotic technology will be integrated.
The robot and its capabilities were presented this morning at the facilities of San Roque University Hospitals, At a press conference presided over by Dr. Herminia Rodríguez, Vice President, and Mr. Sebastián Sansó, CEO of the group, surgeons from the team spoke. UROINTEC International leaders in Robotic Surgery: Dr. Alberto Breda, Scientific and Training Director of the Project; Dr. Pablo Juárez del Dago, CEO of UROINTEC; and Dr. Richard Gastón, Urologist and Internationally renowned Robotic Surgeon.
In the words of Dr. Alberto Breda, “Connected robotic surgery represents a natural evolution of surgical practice. It allows us to share experience, knowledge, and clinical criteria in real time, improving the training of professionals and guaranteeing the best quality of care for patients.”.
In turn, the Dr. Pablo Juárez del Dago He has indicated that “Technology does not replace the surgeon, but rather expands their capabilities and multiplies the generation of knowledge and advanced surgical training, with a direct impact for patients in the Canary Islands.”.
From San Roque University Hospitals, its General Director, Mr. Sebastian SansóHe emphasized that the incorporation of this new system “This reflects our commitment to more precise, humane, and safe medicine. We are committed to technology as a way to improve prognoses, reduce hospital stays, and continue to be leaders in private healthcare in the Canary Islands.”.
“San Roque University Hospitals maintains a firm commitment to technological innovation as a driving force for transforming the healthcare model in the Canary Islands. Incorporating increasingly advanced tools allows us to offer safer procedures to patients and provide our professionals with more precise, efficient work environments geared towards clinical excellence. Furthermore, the strategic location of the Canary Islands reinforces its role as a healthcare bridge to Africa, facilitating the transfer of cutting-edge technology and the development of international collaborative projects in the health sector,” commented the [name of the hospital/organization]. Dr. Herminia Rodríguez, Vice President of the healthcare group.
Among the features of this robotic platform are its high levels of control and precision, as well as its safety and reliability. The system integrates four robotic arms with up to seven degrees of freedom, allowing for a wide range of motion and flexibility. It also offers an advanced control experience, in which the "master unit"—the console from which the surgeon operates—controls the "slave unit," precisely replicating the specialist's hand movements, generating immersive 3D visualization, and filtering out tremors.
The promoters of the initiative have agreed that this milestone positions the Canary Islands as an emerging territory in innovation and robotic surgery.
San Roque University Hospitals, among the healthcare elite
Hospitales Universitarios San Roque, with more than one hundred years of experience as a benchmark of private healthcare in the Canary Islands, became in 2019 the first private hospital in the archipelago to obtain the qualification of University Hospital, a key milestone for research, development and medical innovation.
The group's constant commitment to cutting-edge technology and highly complex medicine places it among the top 50 private hospitals in Spain, according to the 2024 Healthcare Reputation Monitor. This positioning is supported by its presence in prestigious international rankings, such as World's Best Hospitals 2024 – Spain (Newsweek), and by awards such as the 2024 New Medical Economics Award for the best-managed private hospital, which consolidate its leadership in excellent healthcare.
