According to the State Meteorological Agency, the archipelago is expected to enter a phase of adverse weather from Saturday, January 17, with waves that could exceed five meters and wind gusts of more than 70 kilometers per hour in exposed areas.
Southern Gran Canaria is facing unstable weather starting this weekend, marked by increased winds, cloud cover, and a significant deterioration in sea conditions. This situation coincides with the activation of warnings and alerts by the Canary Islands Government, based on information provided by the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET Canarias).
According to the official forecast, starting this Saturday, January 17, 2026, the archipelago will enter a period of adverse weather associated with the arrival of northwest winds and swells. A coastal alert has been issued for the entire Canary Islands due to the forecast of combined northwest swells that could reach and exceed four to five meters, with prolonged periods of swell, coinciding with the new moon and spring tides.
According to the latest update from the Government of the Canary Islands, based on information provided by AEMET Canarias, a coastal phenomena alert has been declared throughout the archipelago since Saturday, January 17, as well as a wind alert in Gran Canaria and the western islands, while Fuerteventura and Lanzarote remain in a pre-alert situation from Sunday the 18th. This decision is adopted in application of the Specific Emergency Plan of the Canary Islands for Risks of Adverse Meteorological Phenomena (PEFMA), given the forecast of combined northwest swells that could reach or exceed 4 to 5 meters, coinciding with a new moon and spring tides, as well as wind gusts that could exceed 70 km/h, with locally very strong values in summit areas.
In the south and southeast of Gran Canaria, the week will be characterized by cloudy periods, moderate to strong gusts of wind, and temperatures that remain within the normal range for this time of year. The wind may intensify, especially in higher and exposed areas, with gusts exceeding 70 kilometers per hour and even higher values at the summits.
In general, Gran Canaria will experience changeable weather over the next few days, with alternating cloud and sunny spells, possible light rain, and rough seas along exposed coasts. The regional government emphasizes the need to take extra precautions, especially along the coast and while traveling by road.
In northern Gran Canaria, cloud cover will be more persistent throughout the week, with a higher probability of light rain and cooler temperatures. The northern and western coasts of the island will be among the areas most affected by strong waves, so extra precautions are advised.
