Alsa entrenches itself in the South: Mobility in Gran Canaria for tourists is on display at Fitur 2026

On the chessboard that is Fitur 2026, Alsa's presence has evolved from that of a transport operator to a leading logistics player. Following the strategic acquisition of Grupo 1844 (Canary Bus), the company, led by Jorge Cosmen, has used the Madrid showcase to validate its commitment to southern Gran Canaria, a destination that the Asturian giant defines not only as a market, but also as a "learning laboratory."

Alsa's interest in the islands stems from a critical metric: tourism as an integrated service chain. With an investment that deploys 800 vehicles and generates 1.600 jobs, Alsa seeks to capture the value of a market where logistical inefficiency—traffic congestion—is perceived as the main "destination killer." At Fitur 2026, Alsa sent a message to investors: southern Gran Canaria is where the future of tourist mobility is being defined. The challenge will be whether the island's road infrastructure can keep pace with Alsa's ambition.

For southern Gran Canaria, where Q3 2025 data shows a 78,6% increase in local transport spending, Alsa's arrival represents the institutional professionalization of last-mile delivery. The company isn't coming to compete on volume, but rather to manage the complexity of a destination that combines mass tourism with high-value segments.

What makes this story unique is the reversal of the usual hierarchy: Alsa isn't coming to impose a mainland model, but rather to replicate the Canary Islands model in the rest of Spain. The "extremely high level of interaction" between operator and administration that exists in the archipelago is, in the company's eyes, a highly valuable intangible asset.

In a sector plagued by employee turnover, Alsa is focusing on talent acquisition and digitalization as key barriers to entry against smaller competitors. Alsa's entry comes at a time of booming spending. While public transportation has fallen by 12,6%, spending on private transfers and value-added services has skyrocketed. By acquiring Grupo 1844, Alsa is positioning itself to navigate between these two worlds, leveraging the infrastructure of a family business with decades of experience while injecting the financial and technological muscle of a multinational corporation.
