The mayor of Santa Lucía de Tirajana expels three councilors from Nueva Canarias for disloyalty to the municipal government

Francisco García announced in the plenary session his expulsion from the government "for disloyalty" after the councilors of Nueva Canarias voted for a motion from AV-PP

The mayor of Santa Lucía de Tirajana, Francisco García, announced this Thursday during the plenary session the expulsion from the local government of the three councilors from Nueva Canarias: Yaiza Pérez, Leví Ramos, and Ofelia Alvarado. Following the session, the mayor held a press conference to clarify that “I made the decision to dismiss them during the session itself after realizing that the three Nueva Canarias councilors sided with the right wing of the council, being the only members who supported the proposal from the People's Party, whose sole purpose was to attack members of the municipal government and the mayor himself; therefore, I considered such disloyalty intolerable.”

Francisco García emphasized that “the mayor of Santa Lucía cannot allow a betrayal of the governing team; I could not tolerate this lack of loyalty for even a minute longer, so I opted for his dismissal and announced it in that same plenary session.” García added that “as soon as the plenary session ended, I spoke with my allies in the government, the spokespeople for the PSOE and Unidos Por Gran Canaria, who expressed their desire to preserve institutional stability; we must maintain our commitment to this stability because the negative consequences fall on the citizens.”

Rejection of political blackmail

The mayor also stated at a press conference that “in the meetings held with councilors from Nueva Canarias to discuss the motion from the People's Party, Nueva Canarias presented us with demands related to the distribution of municipal areas. We understood that we could not accept any kind of blackmail; therefore, when we saw that the three councilors added their votes to an initiative promoted by the right wing against the local government itself, as mayor I could not tolerate such disloyalty towards the municipal executive.”

The motion presented by the People's Party failed to pass, receiving only the support of two of its own councilors and the three representatives from New Canaries. It was rejected by the other six members of the NC Canarian Bloc group, Sergio Vega (United for Gran Canaria), and José Moreno (an independent councilor), while the PSOE, Fortaleza, and Vox abstained.

The mayor announced that starting Friday, he would "meet with my government partners to adopt the necessary measures to ensure municipal political stability." García expressed his support for "temporarily maintaining a minority government composed of twelve councilors, as only one more is needed to reach an absolute majority."

Regarding the PP's motion, it was proposed that "those councilors elected through candidacies promoted by an electoral coalition will acquire the status of non-affiliated when they leave or are removed from the political party that is part of said coalition that proposed their inclusion in the electoral lists, even if they were independent or even if they become part of another party within that same coalition."
