The Maspalomas Sports Complex will be transformed into the largest local produce market in southern Gran Canaria on the last weekend of February. The San Bartolomé de Tirajana Town Council, through its Department of Agriculture, has organized the "Local Produce Fair," an ambitious initiative expected to attract more than 10.000 people between Saturday, February 28th and Sunday, March 1st.

The event, which will take place in Field No. 3 of the sports complex from 09:00 to 14:00, was created with the aim of reversing the disconnect between the consumer and the producer, highlighting the quality of fresh and locally sourced products generated in the municipality and its surroundings.

Beyond being a sales space, the fair has been conceived as a strategic tool for environmental sustainability. By promoting short supply chains, the organization seeks to directly reduce the carbon footprint derived from food transportation, fostering a fairer and more balanced consumption model.

The main purpose of this event is to convey to the public the benefits of choosing local products, reinforcing concepts such as traceability, freshness, and excellence. According to the objectives set for the event, the aim is for consumers not only to purchase the product but also to recognize the prestige and social contribution of the producers who keep the local production network alive.

The fair aims to establish itself as a driver of economic development for the primary sector in San Bartolomé de Tirajana. By increasing the visibility of local brands, the initiative seeks to boost direct sales and, at the same time, foster entrepreneurship among the population, especially in the agri-food sector.

With an estimated attendance of 5.000 people per day, the event is shaping up to be a public interest initiative that combines tourism promotion—given its strategic location in Maspalomas—with strengthening the area's rural identity. Although the main venue is the Maspalomas Sports Complex, the organizers are allowing for the necessary flexibility in the event of unforeseen weather conditions or force majeure to ensure that the activities run smoothly. The focus of this first edition is clear: to bring the countryside closer to the city and consolidate local producers in an increasingly globalized market.
