On the political and social landscape of southeastern Gran Canaria, the town of Ingenio has decided to chart its own course towards 2026 with a Strategic Grant Plan that blends social urgency with a deep respect for local identity. In the area of the Environment, a curious alliance has emerged: an agreement with the Ingenio Mid-Altitude Hunting Club. With a budget of €2.500, a 'Municipal Planting Plan' will be funded. The aim is for the hunters themselves to become stewards of the land, restoring degraded soils in the mid-altitude areas to improve biodiversity and the landscape, demonstrating that hunting and environmental conservation can share funding.
At the opposite end of the spectrum, the municipality is prioritizing international visibility by supporting the 50th edition of the Rally Islas Canarias-WRC with €33.000. This investment in high-impact sports tourism is part of the same strategic plan as the €300.000 allocated to address the most pressing social needs (food, electricity, and water) for the most vulnerable families.
With a total budget of 1,5 million euros, the City Council has given the green light to a roadmap that seeks to balance the large figures of social emergency aid with "picturesque" but vital items for the local ecosystem, from animal protection to the survival of trades that refuse to die.
One of the most striking initiatives, due to its specific focus, is the commitment to public health and animal welfare. Through the Ingenio Animal Welfare Association, the municipality will allocate €10.000, divided between two projects: the CETA project for the collection and protection of abandoned dogs, and the CES project, dedicated exclusively to the ethical management and control of feral cat colonies in urban areas. Ingenio recognizes that harmonious coexistence also depends on caring for its four-legged neighbors.
Leisure and festivities also have their own names. The Carrizal Carnival Board takes the lion's share of the budget for celebrations with €60.000, bolstered by local carnival groups like Los Legañosos (€18.000) and Las Legañosas (€10.000), which act as barometers of social satire in the southeast. Ingenio thus presents itself in 2026 as a municipality that addresses the urgent without forgetting the important, protecting everything from the needle of a jigsaw to the engine of a rally car, in a budgetary balancing act that defines the idiosyncrasies of southeastern Gran Canaria.
