Alarm on a KLM flight in Gran Canaria after a rat appears on board

The presence of a rat on a KLM Airlines long-haul flight has had direct consequences for travelers to and from Gran Canaria, after the airline was forced to cancel the return flight and activate cleaning and accommodation protocols for passengers.

The incident occurred on December 10th on a plane flying from Amsterdam to Aruba. The rodent was spotted while the aircraft was already over the Atlantic, causing concern among the approximately 240 passengers on board. With no safe alternative landing option available, the captain opted to continue to the destination.

According to the airline, the crew kept the animal under observation for the remainder of the flight and confirmed that it did not access food or sensitive areas of the aircraft. However, upon arrival, the return flight was canceled for health reasons, forcing the rebooking of passengers, including numerous tourists who had planned to connect to Gran Canaria to continue or end their vacations.

The affected passengers were accommodated in hotels while the aircraft underwent a thorough cleaning before resuming service. The situation has caused frustration among some passengers, especially during the peak tourist season for the island, where any disruption to air travel has an immediate impact on hotels, transfers, and travel plans.

The incident is reminiscent of other recent episodes in commercial aviation, such as the one that occurred on a Spirit Airlines flight in the United States, and once again highlights the importance of security and hygiene controls on aircraft that connect Europe with key tourist destinations such as Gran Canaria.
